Inhale The future, Exhale The Past
Awham Mohamed Ali has been practicing yoga since 2012 and teaching private and group classes since 2016. After receiving training from the Africa Yoga Project, he became the first local certified Vinyasa instructor leading the journey to power sequence in Lamu, a beautiful Swahili island off the coast of Kenya.
While traveling through Thailand, Awham trained in ThaiVedic massage, which also informs his understanding of the body when working with clients.
Through yoga , traditional Thai and Ayurveda he aims to nourish the nervous system, align energy and balance the body.
In addition to teaching visitors from around the world and joining retreats and yoga festivals, Awham is dedicated to nurturing wellness in his community. He offers community classes to local schools and organisations, including Safari Doctors.
As well as his yoga and massage practice, Awham helps his family manage Msafini Hotel and volunteers with the Lamu Tourism Association.
His favourite pastime involves sailing, swimming and enjoying the pristine white-sand beaches of the Lamu archipelago.
These is some of the reviews by people who interacted with Awham:
“I had the pleasure of taking several yoga classes from Awham when I was in Kenya. In my 20 years as a practitioner and 15 years as a teacher I have learned that some people have it when it comes to teach yoga and some don’t. Awham is one of those teachers who has “it” – he has a calm cadence to carry the class and hold space in the room, he is knowledgeable on the postures, adjustments and modifications for all student levels, and most importantly his spirit shines through as someone who lives his yoga and commits himself to excellence as a teacher and as a person. I recommend him without hesitation!”
- Rachael Eckles, private student, attorney, Washington, DC
“I always have my client meet Awham upon arrival in Lamu. A private class with him is the perfect remedy to a long and exhausting safari. After the first class, they always want more! They love his calming presence, knowledge, and ability to customize the class to their needs.”
– Kelly Campbell, Founder of The Village Experience, a responsible tourism company
“I always tell everyone Awham is the best yoga teacher I’ve had. He taught me to do yoga independently, which is amazing because I travel a lot and work awkward hours, so it’s not always possible for me to attend scheduled classes. I still go to his classes whenever I can so he can correct my form.”
- Hannah Templeton, private client, Founder of Salai Clinics, a nonprofit
“Awham is a confident and creative teacher! His class was well planned and conducted, had a great flow and good instructions. Communication with him beforehand was easy and a pleasure.”
- Laura Maier, organizer of Living Yoga, Zanzibar
“I have attended Awham’s classes and he gives clear instructions and conducts a structured class. He also has a friendly and approachable personality.”
- Madhvi Dalal, private student, Hatha yoga instructor
